Visit Ainola, home of the world famous composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) and his wife Aino. A guided tour in the timber-built villa designed by Finnish architect Lars Sonck. A visit to the garden of Aino Sibelius, where the fruit trees, berry bushes and flowers she planted are carefully maintained. Sibelius’s grave is located in the southern part of the plot, sheltered by apple trees.
Lake Tuusula Shore Road on your way back to the city centre is lined by the home museums of the artists who lived and worked here a hundred years ago. In the early 1900s a unique artist community formed around Lake Tuusula. The artists who lived and worked here had an enormous impact on nurturing the Finnish identity, on our cultural history and on Finnish society as a whole. They include author Juhani Aho, poet J. H. Erkko, painters Pekka Halonen, Eero Järnefelt and Venny Soldan-Brofeldt, and composer Jean Sibelius.
Back in the city, visit Sibelius Monument (by Eila Hiltunen) in the Sibelius park.
The monument was unveiled on September 7th, 1967. The Sibelius Monument, resembling organ pipes, is made of welded steel with over 600 pipes and with the bust of the composer on one side. The monument is one of Helsinki's most popular statues and one of the most well-known tourist attractions.
